Steven Joynes, Selly Oak Contract, Birmingham

Delighted for the opportunity to train

Steven Joynes, 24, is now into the second year of a Horticulture apprenticeship. One day a week he attends King's Heath Training School in Birmingham, a part of the world renowned Pershore College. At this centre of horticultural excellence Steve is learning a variety of skills and techniques that he is able to put to a practical use during the rest of the week working for Quadron.

After leaving school Steve, who has always had a keen interest in horticulture, secured a seasonal contract with the company helping reinforce the permanent workforce during the busy summer period. A keen and industrious worker for a few seasons, we were eventually in a position to offer him a permanent contract.

Steve was further delighted when the opportunity arose for him to become an apprentice and to have the opportunity to train for an NVQ Level 2 qualification. He really enjoys working outdoors and being able to put into practice on a daily basis all the skills he is learning.

Once he is qualified Steve would like to begin progressing up the management ladder where he would be able to pass on his knowledge and skills to other young men such as himself whilst developing Quadron's overall business portfolio.

However, it is not all work and no play for Steve, who has many outside interests. Indeed Steve is a very talented striker for a local football team playing at quite a high standard in the local Birmingham league. He also likes to broaden his horizons travelling abroad and sight seeing whenever he can. Occasionally he will slow down his hundred miles an hour lifestyle and take a well deserved break cruising the internet and improving his knowledge in a wide variety of subjects.

With the age profile in the horticulture industry increasingly weighted towards the over 40s it is important that young, driven and talented people like Steve are brought into the business and given the opportunity to thrive. Added to the right training and experience Steven no doubt possesses all the right qualities and definitely has the potential to become a very important part of Quadron for many years to come. We look forward to watching his progress.
