Friends of Cotteridge Park Clear Up Day

Friends of Cotteridge Park Clear Up Day

Quadron is pleased to join in with community initiatives and to assist the many Friends groups in Birmingham to involve local residents in improving their parks.

One such recent event in Cotteridge Park, "the best little park in Birmingham" was organised by the Friends of Cotteridge Park in conjunction with CSV (Community Service Volunteers) and npower.

Emma Woolf, Chair of the Friends of Cotteridge Park, writes: "On the 6th May 2009 more than 20 volunteers from npower joined the Friends of Cotteridge Park to clear the last derelict area in the community orchard. This last section of the clear up had been left for a long time as it was too hard and back breaking to contemplate.

On the day we cleared 2 huge skips worth of green waste - all that's left to do now is to clear up the last bits of rubble, glass, bits and bobs that a derelict space accumulates.

Over the previous couple of years volunteers from the Friends group had cleared enough space for 30 fruit trees.

This last section has been earmarked as a wildlife habitat with a particular focus on making the area bee-friendly. Our aim, with the help of the Birmingham Beekeepers' Association - to do our bit for bees in Birmingham.

We want to say a huge "thank you" to all the npower volunteers (and CSV for matching us up). They achieved something in a day that would have taken us 6 months of Saturdays. We now have a wonderful starting point for the new wildlife area of the orchard and far fewer weeds in the flower beds.

They worked so well together and we hope they had as much fun as possible - any time they want to come back we'll find something less back breaking for them to do.

Thanks also to Quadron Services Limited for providing the skip and coming up with a second one so quickly when we outstripped everyone's expectations and filled the first one before lunch."
