Southwark has been steadily increasing its count of Green Flag parks from just one four years ago to a record eight in 2010.
Brimmington Park new win 2010!:
This small urban park just off the Old Kent Road in South London is
very popular and well used by the local community with an active
Friends Group and many community events such as planting spring bulbs,
and an annual Mid-Summer Festival. Facilities and features include a
Childrens Play Area, sensory garden and multi-use sports facilities.
The aims of the Friends group in conjunction with Southwark Council
include the promotion of conservation for the benefit of wildlife and
the community and the use of the park as a place for quiet, informal
enjoyment and study.
Russia Dock Woodland - 2009 Award winner: Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill ecological park run through the middle of the Rotherhithe peninsula. Originally a dock used for importing timber from Norway, Russia and Sweden, in 1980 it was in-filled and planted as native grass areas for recreational activities, and a series of water channels and ponds providing habitats for kingfishers and herons. In 1985 the LDDC added an artificial hill, Stave Hill, to the west edge of the park, using waste material and rubble. Quadron works closely with the very active Friends of Group to manage the area in accordance with their wishes and to promote its ecological importance and biodiversity value.
Paterson Park - 2009 Award winner: Paterson Park is built on land that was once railway sidings bombed in World War II. In 2007 improvements were made to create a well designed open space to meet the needs of the local community. New facilities include a children's play area, allotments and a multiuse games area.
Southwark Park: Southwark Park has achieved Green Flag status consistently since 2006. Quadron is responsible for its cleanliness and the horticultural standards within its wonderful gardens including The Old English Cottage Garden, as well as the preservation of its biodiversity value through careful maintenance regimes.
Dulwich Park: A Grade II registered park, Dulwich Park has held its Green Flag status since its refurbishment in 2006 and is packed with historic features as well as community and sports facilities suitable for formal and informal recreational activities. The park has many features of horticultural interest including a "dry garden" where a wide range of plants that can be successfully grown with little water is displayed.
Bermondsey Spa Gardens was reopened following complete refurbishment in spring 2006 and gained its first Green Flag in 2007. The park is designed with the local community in mind, offering good lighting, a toddlers' play area, multiuse games area, running track and dog walking area. Quadron's maintenance regime is particularly geared towards the cleanliness of the site.
Sunray Gardens is a well used local park which still maintains many of its original landscape characteristics. A feature of the park is the large kidney shaped lake which is very important for local biodiversity. Other facilities in the park include a children's play area and multi use games area. The park has been awarded Green Flag status since 2008.
Peckham Rye Park and Common comprises a newly restored Victorian Park and historic common in one of the most densely populated areas of London. It provides a pleasant relaxation area for the local community and has been designated as having "Borough Grade I" importance for nature conservation, due to its pockets of woodland, meadows, ponds and stream system. The park has been awarded Green Flag status since 2007.
