Cremorne Gardens new in 2010: Cremorne Gardens lie along the embankment at the southern end of Cheyne Walk. Popular pleasure gardens between 1845 and 1877, entertainment used to include concerts, fireworks, balloon ascents and galas. The bright lights of the gardens are depicted in Whistler's famous "Nocturne: Blue and Silver Cremorne Lights 1872". Objections from influential residents, however, led to the closure of the gardens and most of the original site is now built over. The wrought-iron gateway which had stood at the King's Road end of the original gardens and belonged to Lord Cremorne's house was incorporated when the riverside park was newly landscaped in 1981/2. The gardens today include a new waterplay splashpad added in 2010, a poetry chair complete with books and a wildflower meadow providing a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city traffic.
Gunnersbury Cemetery new in 2010: Opened in 1929, Gunnersbury Cemetery has an entrance drive lined with displays of colourful flower tubs and floral bedding arrangements, including flowering shrubs such as camellias and roses along the side walls. Gunnersbury Cemetery is the site of the Katyn Memorial, which is the focus for the local Polish community, erected in remembrance of the thousands of Polish prisoners of war who disappeared in 1940, later identified in mass graves at Katyn, near Smolensk. The memory becomes especially poignant in 2010 following the tragic loss of many Polish officials including the President, Lech Kaczynski, in an air crash on their way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn forest massacre. 97 people were killed in the crash in Western Russia in thick fog on April 10 2010.
St Luke's Park - new in 2009: St Luke's is a popular community park in the centre of Chelsea close to the busy King's Road. It has a new playground and all weather pitch, immaculate lawns and formal bedded gardens with attractive, vibrant and unusual flower displays. The gardens are well used by local people, and surrounded by private and social housing. It is also popular with office workers, hospital staff and shoppers.
Quadron staff in the park are particularly well thought of by the parks' users as was evidenced by the Public Consultation Report carried out prior to the recent refurbishments. A popular innovation in 2009 by the park keepers was the introduction of vegetable plots instead of summer bedding areas, which have been tended by local volunteers and children under the supervision of the park keepers.
Holland Park: Despite an estimated million visitors each year and heavy usage for sports activities, Holland Park nevertheless retains some richly diverse wildlife areas, and has retained its green flag for several consecutive years now. Holland Park has many elements of unique interest to offer the local community, with an active Friends of Group and local school involvement in conjunction with the Ecology Services. An innovation in 2009 was the planting of an extensive range of herbs for use by the Belvedere Restaurant, located within the park.
Kensington Memorial Park, North Kensington has held its green flag status since 2007, following a major improvement programme. In a deprived area of North London, this park offers valuable green space, attractive to both wildlife and people. The new state of the art water play area is immensely popular and attracts families from all around. The annual bedding displays have contributed to the Council's London in Bloom Awards and Quadron has received praise for its high standards of maintenance.
