Triple Green Flag Success for Hammersmith & Fulham!

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham was delighted with its first ever Green Flag awards in 2009, winning not one but three awards for Margravine Cemetery, Ravenscourt Park and Frank Banfield Park.

These are the first Green Flag awards to be achieved in Hammersmith & Fulham. This accolade is the culmination of months of planning, preparation and hard work. Teamwork and partnership have been the watchwords throughout this time, with Quadron, Client Officers and Friends of groups working closely with each other. The work involved extensive new planting schemes, turfing and large-scale mulching.

Margravine Cemetery is a pleasant, tranquil place used by local people and visitors to the borough. It is well landscaped with specimen trees and is a designated Nature Conservation Area of Local Importance. The Friends of Margravine work actively to enhance the nature conservation value of the site through planting days, guided walks and interpretation.

Ravenscourt Park combines well used sporting facilities and paddling pool with attractive landscaping and a good range of wildlife habitats, covering over eight hectares of parkland and dating back to the late 19th century. Many local interest groups and active volunteer involvement in the maintenance of the park foster a strong sense of community and Quadron is keen to work with such groups in collaboration with the Council to develop the facilities and horticultural standards.

Although not part of the contract, Quadron also assisted in helping Hammersmith and Fulham achieve the same status in Frank Banfield Park. This work was carried out as a gesture of goodwill and further demonstrates the mutual benefits to be gained from a close working relationship with clients and user groups. This small community park has recently been transformed with the involvement of the local community into a welcoming modern park with attractive landscaping and planting and new play area and furniture.

Councillor Paul Bristow, cabinet member for residents' services, said: "This is absolutely wonderful news for Hammersmith & Fulham. Our ParkLife campaign has shown all residents just how highly we value our parks and to win three Green Flag Awards really is out of this world. Winning one award would have been fantastic; Winning two would have been extraordinary, but to win three awards at the same time is practically unheard of."

Cllr Bristow added: "I think that we can all agree that all of our parks are looking in fantastic condition this summer and it is no wonder that we have won three Green Flag Awards."
